To clean a clogged drain, start with the least aggressive tool. Remove the stopper and pull out the hair or debris you can see, plunge with a cup plunger, then use a hand drain snake if the water still sits. That sequence solves most bathroom and kitchen clogs without chemicals.
Where the clog sits changes the method. A kitchen line clogs with grease, a bathroom line with hair and soap, and a laundry line with lint. This guide covers each, what enzyme products can and cannot do, and where to stop.
Kitchen, bathroom, or laundry: what clogs each drain
The fixture tells you most of what you need to know:
| Drain | Usual cause | First move | Stop and call if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen sink | Grease, food scraps, coffee grounds | Plunge with the other basin plugged, then snake the trap arm | Both sinks and the dishwasher back up together |
| Bathroom sink | Hair and soap film around the stopper | Pull the stopper and clean it, then plunge or snake | The tub and toilet also gurgle |
| Shower or tub | Hair, soap, skin oils | Pull the strainer, hook out hair, then plunge with the overflow blocked | Water backs up from the floor drain |
| Laundry standpipe | Lint, soap, small clothes items | Check the lint trap and hose, then snake the standpipe | The standpipe overflows on a normal load |
A DIY sequence that avoids damaging the pipe
Work from gentle to firm. Stop if a step meets hard resistance.
- 1
Clear what you can see
Remove the stopper or strainer. A bent wire or a plastic hair tool pulls out most of a bathroom clog in under a minute. Wear gloves.
- 2
Plunge with a cup plunger
Cover the overflow opening with a wet cloth so pressure goes down the drain. Fill the basin with enough water to cover the cup, then work 15 to 20 firm strokes.
- 3
Take apart the trap
Put a bucket under the P-trap. Loosen the slip nuts by hand, pull the trap off, clean it, and check the arm going into the wall. Many kitchen clogs sit right there.
- 4
Use a hand snake
Feed a hand snake into the drain, turning the handle so the tip works through the clog. Pull it back with the debris, wipe, and repeat if needed.
- 5
Flush and test
Run warm water, not boiling, for a minute. If the drain runs fast and quiet, you are done. If it slows within a day, the clog is deeper.
Why chemical drain openers are risky
Poison control describes non-enzymatic drain cleaners as strong acids or strong alkalis, such as sulfuric acid or lye. They can burn skin and eyes, and swallowing them can cause serious injury. Splashback is more likely when the product is poured into a fully blocked drain.
Mixing products makes it worse. Combining some household cleaners, such as bleach with ammonia or an acid, can give off toxic fumes. If you have used a chemical opener and a plumber arrives, say so, because the standing water in the drain may still be caustic.
If someone swallows a drain cleaner, gets it on the skin, or breathes the fumes, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. It is free and open 24 hours a day.

Call (855) 575-2890What enzyme cleaners can and cannot do
Enzymatic cleaners use bacteria and enzymes to break down organic material. They are gentler than the chemical openers. They work slowly, over hours, and best on thin organic films in a drain that is still flowing.
They do not clear a solid hair plug, a wad of paper, a grease mass, or a pipe blocked by roots. If water is standing in the basin, there is nothing for the enzymes to travel through. Use them as maintenance after a clog is cleared, not as a rescue.
Grease is the usual cause in Hanahan kitchens
Charleston Water System supplies Hanahan with moderately soft water, with an average hardness of 58.4 ppm, or 3.4 grains per gallon, and it is treated with chloramines. That means mineral scale is not the usual reason a Hanahan drain narrows. Grease is.
Clemson Extension, citing EPA, says grease from restaurants, homes, and industry is the most common cause of reported sewer blockages, at 47 percent. Hot water and soap push it along but do not dissolve it, and it hardens again farther down the line.
Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel, pour cooled fat into a can for the trash, and scrape plates before rinsing. Those three habits do more for a kitchen drain than any product.
Safe drain-cleaning kit for a Hanahan home
Most of this fits in one bucket:
- A cup plunger for sinks and tubs, and a separate flange plunger for toilets
- A hand drain snake (a 25 foot hand-crank model is fine for basic clogs)
- A plastic hair-removal tool and rubber gloves
- A bucket, a rag, and slip joint pliers for the P-trap
- Eye protection, if you have to work under a sink
- A small pail for used grease, so it goes in the trash rather than the drain
A hand snake that meets hard resistance has probably reached a pipe bend or the end of what it can do. Do not force it.
How to tell if the clog is in the house or the street
A clog in a single fixture is inside the house. If several fixtures back up, or if the lowest drain in the house, such as a shower or floor drain, backs up first, the main line is the likelier culprit. A main line clog can sit on your property or farther out.
The City of Hanahan Public Works page lists Berkeley County Sanitation for sewer issues and Charleston Water System for water. For a backup that looks like it comes from the street, confirm which utility serves your block before you call. For a clog inside the walls, call a plumber. Our drain cleaning and sewer line cleaning visits cover both.
Stop when the drain refills within a day, when two or more fixtures are involved, when the snake hits something it cannot pass, or when the pipe or trap is cracked, corroded, or leaking. More force at that point can break an old pipe or push the clog into a worse spot.
When this becomes an emergency
Treat it as urgent when sewage is rising in a tub or floor drain, when water is spilling into the living space, or when every drain in the house is slow. Stop running water, keep people away from the affected area, and call. Our plumbers cover this through hydro jetting and cable cleaning around the clock, and we serve homeowners in Goose Creek and Ladson too.
What a plumber does that a hand snake cannot
A plumber uses a powered cable machine with cutting heads that reach farther than a hand snake. For a grease-coated line, hydro jetting scours the pipe wall with high-pressure water. A camera shows what is actually there: roots, a bellied pipe, or a collapsed section.
Cost depends on access to a cleanout, how far the clog is, the pipe size and material, and whether a camera is needed. We give a clear price before work starts. A recurring clog is a sign to look inside the pipe instead of clearing it again.
Hanahan local note: soft water, grease, and who to call
CWS reports moderately soft water, an average of 58.4 ppm or 3.4 grains per gallon, and uses chloramines. In practice that means a stubborn Hanahan drain is almost always a physical or greasy blockage, not mineral buildup, so skip products sold to dissolve scale.
The City Public Works page lists Berkeley County Sanitation for sewer issues, (843) 572-4400, and CWS for water, (843) 727-6800. A single slow sink is your plumbing. A backup across the street or the neighborhood is a question for the sewer provider. Confirm who serves your street.
If you hire a plumber, verify them with the SC Residential Builders Commission under LLR.

Frequently asked questions
Are baking soda and vinegar good for clogged drains?
They fizz, but poison control says the combination is unlikely to clear tough grease clogs. It is harmless, so use it if you like, but do not rely on it.
Can I pour boiling water down a clogged drain?
Hot tap water is fine. Boiling water can soften PVC joints and crack porcelain, and it will not clear a solid clog.
Does Hanahan's water cause drain buildup?
Not in the usual way. CWS water is moderately soft, so mineral scale is not the main cause. Grease, hair, soap film, and wipes are.
Who do I call for a sewer backup in Hanahan, the plumber or the county?
If one fixture inside your home is backing up, call a plumber. If the backup is in the street or affects neighbors, call the sewer provider the City lists, Berkeley County Sanitation, after confirming which utility serves your street.
How often should I clean my drains?
Clear the stoppers monthly, keep grease out of the kitchen sink, and snake only when the water slows. A drain that needs help every few weeks should be inspected.
